Congrats @uclafacultyclub, a 2024 @laconservancy Preservation Award winner! Designed in 1959 by the architectural firm Austin, Field, & Fry, this rare example of an institution building in a modern ranch style was once slated for demolition. Its post-and-beam construction, floor-to-ceiling windows, and indoor-outdoor spaces reflect the California midcentury modern style. One of the important aspects in saving the structure was the large installation in the Cypress Lounge of Evelyn’s early Castles designs for Panelcarve. In the mid 50s the Ackermans actually made furniture! They offered a series of coffee tables with mosaic inlay in metal or walnut frames made in their LA-based studio, Jenev. Included in California Designed in 1955 at the Long Beach Municipal Art Center @lbmaorg and @deyoungmuseum, this table was featured on @latimes Home magazine cover July 15, 1956. Congratulations to Diabou Hubbard, the latest recipient of the Jerome Ackerman Internship @alfredceramicartmuseum! Diabou is a third-year student in the School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics @alfreduniversity with a focus on painting and fiber-related media. Diabou’s focus on African traditionalism and modernity and a deep interest in the cultural diversity of African and Senegalese cultural heritage influence her work. Wayne Higby, Director of the Museum, shared that her “artistic engagement with textiles echoes that of Evelyn Ackerman who, in collaboration with her husband, made a significant impact on modernist design in America.” A visit to the Museum with her Asian Ceramic Art class inspired Diabou “to further explore the intricate world of museums, specifically immersing myself in the role museums play in preserving cultural heritage.” The Internship provides in-depth exposure to museum professional practices as well as insight to creative processes across history and is designed to further each intern’s professional goals while helping the Museum address its organizational needs. We are thrilled to honor Jerome Ackerman’s design legacy and Distinguished Alumni award @alfredceramics in this way.
